Tegnestuen Lokal Building
Built in the 1960s, this six-storey slab block condominium in Copenhagen featured a typically austere facade.
Rather than tearing the building down and rebuilding, the architectural firm Tegnestuen Lokal, transformed the building.
The architects created a more attractive building with a new social space for the community.
Tegnestuen Lokal replaced the severe concrete balconies with a series of glazed blocks.
The blocks improved the aesthetic of the building plus gave residents an outdoor inspired space where they can relax and converse with neighbours.
The new space is ideal for growing plants, which is why the architects gave the project the name Ørsted Gardens.
